Your Invisible Friend

YOUR INVISIBLE FRIEND

Joy walked along in a lighthearted manner and saw before her, a girl languishing in the dirt. Unable to walk past without asking the girl if she needed help, Joy stopped.
'Can I help?' Joy asked.
The girl sobbed and Joy could see that her knees were scuffed and grazed.
'Please could you pick me up?' stammered the girl.
Joy leaned over to give the girl a helping hand and she stood up.
'Thank you!' she exclaimed, feeling better already.
Seeing that the girl was on her feet and able to continue, Joy left on her merry way and disappeared down the path. As she went her way, Joy met up with Commonsense and they decided to continue together. It was not long before they came across an angry, angry man - a very angry man - and she asked,
'Can I help?'
The man glared at the wheel of his broken wagon and then kicked it hard.
Again Joy asked, 'Can I help?'
It was as if the man did not see Joy nor did he hear her words for he grumbled something about someone paying for the broken axle and he stomped on his hat to make his point.
Commonsense asked, 'Can I help?'
But it was to no avail. Seeing that the man could not see her nor he could he hear Commonsense, they both left the man to enjoy his anger.
A few miles down the path, they saw an old lady carrying a heavy burden and Joy asked once again,
'Can I help?'
The old lady recognised Joy, for she had once had an encounter with her many many moons past.
'I could do with some lightening of the load,' she responded.
Joy took the burden effortlessly and the old lady sat down to catch her breath.
After a while, the old lady felt better and stood up to take the burden from Joy but Commonsense asked,
'To take the load again will only tire you and we will be far gone and you will be no better off, is there no way that you can do this differently?'
The old lady pondered this for a moment and then said, 'Now that I have Joy with me, I can see that I must ask my big strong sons to come up this hill to carry my burdens for me.'
Commonsense responded, 'Joy has that effect on people and many new options open when Joy is invited in.'
They helped the old lady to store her burden under a bush for her strong sons to find once she reached their house. She showed her gratitude by offering them to stay anytime in her house.
Joy and Commonsense left and carried on their journey over the hills and far away.
When the sun was setting, Joy saw a Sage sitting on the roadside and when he saw them, he stood up excited. It was obvious that he had been waiting for Joy.
'I have been waiting for two fortnights to catch you, as you go past,' he exclaimed.
'Can I help?' Joy asked.
'No! On the contrary, I have been waiting to walk with you as you travel and go about your journey.'
'Why would you do that?' asked Commonsense intrigued.
The Sage spoke quietly, 'I have been walking many twilight's on this world and it took me a long time to realise that each time I felt lighthearted, was when I was in the company of Joy herself. I also noted that, when Joy was gone, my world seemed to turn dark and many mishaps happened. The greatest thing that I came to realise was that when Joy was in my company, the road ahead looked wide open and there were many paths leading off it. My options were vast and I could see for miles!'

'But, you cannot follow Joy everywhere! You have your life to live . . .' exclaimed Commonsense, dismayed.

'I can. The most wonderful thing that I came to observe when I was in the company of Joy, was that everywhere Joy went, I was meant to be! I no longer had to rack my brains to decide on what to do and where to be and who to be. All I had to do - literally - was walk with Joy . . . actually take the steps and watch what happened. The right people came along, the right things happened and I was always in the right place at the right time. Whenever there were shadows, just Joy's presence diminished them or gave me the courage to deal with them swiftly. I always felt like I was on the winning side . . . I felt supported and safe, comforted and I knew that life without Joy would be tangled with mishaps and dramas. I have given my life over to this path of Joy and I have been waiting patiently for Joy to meet me!'
Both Joy and Commonsense said not a thing.
There was nothing to be said.
The three of them set out on the path that to the common eye seemed straight and narrow, but to the eyes that saw Joy, it branched off into thousands of paths that all went somewhere wonderful.

  1. Thank you, it is so nice to read you again. I have noticed that too, when joy is around everything goes smooth. It is the reason for my being. Much love and joy to you.
